Case 6

Initials:   B.A.-G.

Age:  10 months

B. had sepsis shortly after birth, and stayed in the NICU for several weeks, receiving gentamicin for 7 days, which puts him at risk of progressive hearing loss.  He was seen for sedated ABR testing.

  • Does a 10 month old require sedated ABR testing?

His parents do not have concerns about his hearing.  He is responding to sounds and babbling normally.  He has not had any major illnesses since leaving the hospital.

Otoscopic examination revealed clear ear canals.  226 Hz tympanograms are normal.  Ipsilateral acoustic reflexes are present at all frequencies.

  • Is it appropriate to test 226 Hz tympanograms on a 10 month old, or should 1000 Hz tympanometry have been used?
