Case 13

Patient:  L.S.

Age:  9

Gender:  Female

L.S. failed a hearing screening at school in just her right ear.  She had not reported hearing loss prior to the school hearing screening, but on questioning after receiving the report from the school, L.S.  told her mother that she hadn’t heard out of her right ear for several weeks.  There was no report of otalgia.  L.S. had not had any recent illness, nor head trauma.  She is a healthy child. There is no familial history of hearing loss.  Birth history is unremarkable; she was delivered by Cesarean section at full term.  Normal developmental milestones were met.

Otoscopy revealed clear ear canals bilaterally.

Tympanograms are type A.  Acoustic reflex thresholds ranged from 70 to  85 dB HL, ipsilaterally and contralaterally in both ears.  The audiogram is shown below.
