Case 7

The patient was born at 22 weeks gestation with heart and eye complications and spent 5 months in the hospital.  He passed  his neonatal hearing screening and his speech and language development were normal up to age 1.

At age 2 he was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma. He received neoadjuvant therapy and the tumor was resected.  He received cisplatin and doxorubicin.

  • What is a hepatoblastoma?
  • How ototoxic is cisplatin?  Is doxorubicin ototoxic?
  • What is neoadjuvant chemotherapy?

There was no baseline audiogram; testing began after treatment had commenced.
