H.M. is a 77 year old veteran who reports decreased hearing sensitivity. He says he is having problems hearing women’s voices, understanding TV, and understanding speech in noisy environments. He does not have problems using the telephone. He denies tinnitus and vertigo, and his history is negative for otologic surgery, recent ear infections and otalgia.
His brother also has a hearing loss. He has a history of military and subsequent occupational noise exposure.
He had heart surgery four years ago and has a swallowing disorder which is being treated by a VA physician. His history is negative for diabetes, stroke, hypertension, kidney/liver disease, head injury, facial numbness.
He does not have any reported problems with dexterity or vision.
