Case 4 Audiometrics

Tonal loudness discomfort levels were obtained. The LDL was 100 dB HL at 500 Hz and 110 dB HL at 2000 Hz for the left ear. The right ear LDLs were 100 and 105 dB HL.

  • Describe the type and severity of the hearing loss.
    • There are a couple of “technical errors” in the audiometric testing. What was done wrong or not done, that should have been done?

  • Calculate the two and three frequency pure tone averages (PTAs). When is a 2 / 3 frequency average typically used? Are the spondee thresholds in agreement with the PTAs?
  • How would you characterize the word recognition scores?
  • Calculate the dynamic range (the difference between LDL and threshold). Would you characterize that dynamic range as normal or reduced? What does a reduced dynamic range indicate, and which site of lesion is it consistent with?
