Patient A

We will consider how to educate three different patients, assume that the audiogram and immittance findings belong in turn to each different patient.  Patient A is a recent immigrant to the county, he has not brought with him a family member or friend whose English is more advanced.  Patient A is able to understand simple, basic conversational English.

  • Write out the script of how you would explain the results to patient A.  Focus on avoiding all professional jargon.  Keep the message as clear and simple as possible so that the main points that you need to convey are understood, and not “lost” amid too much detail.  Ideally, after you explain, the patient should be able to summarize in about 2 or 3 sentences what he needs to do and give back the basic “why I need to do this.”
