Evan, age 12, has survived a fight with cancer, but has lost hearing due to the chemotherapy. In the intake interview, he tells you he has noticed decrease in hearing and ringing in his ears, but comments “that’s like the hair loss, it’s temporary, right?” Since conductive loss is possible, though not likely, the audiologist at that time only said “Well, we’ll know more after we test your hearing.”
Immittance is consistent with cochlear site of lesion. Here is his audiogram.
- What is your approach to telling the parents and Evan? Would you discuss the findings together, or with the parents separately? What emotional reactions would you expect from each, and what can you do to assist their adjustment to the news?
