Mother:  OK, where do we go from here?

Audiologist:  We now know how severe the loss is, and our test results indicate that it’s not the type that surgery or medicine can correct.  However, it’s best to have an ear, nose and throat doctor see your child, ideally someone who specializes in pediatrics.  Once the doctor gives the all-clear, we can fit Johnny with his hearing aids on a trial basis, to ensure that we’ve got the right set for him.  We can take that one step at a time, or if you like, I can order the hearing aids now so they are ready once the ear doctor gives medical approval for hearing aid use.  How would you like to proceed?
