Audiometrics

Here is her audiogram.

ST stands for spondee threshold. WRS is word recognition score, the final column indicates the intensity level at which the word recognition testing took place.  Below are the results of speech testing on this patient.

S.T. WRS % @ HL
Right 40 80% 75
Left 50 84% 75

NU-6 ½ lists

  • Describe the loss type and severity in each ear.
  • Why was masking sometimes used for bone conduction, but at other times it was not?
  • Word recognition testing was, of course, tested at a level above the patient’s threshold for hearing speech. How much above the spondee threshold was the word recognition testing conducted?  (Another way of asking this question is “what is the decibel sensation level of the stimuli used during word recognition testing?”)

A note on the audiogram indicates “Speech MCL 75 dB HL in each ear; speech UCL approximately 95-100 dB HL”.

  • What are MCL and UCL, and what information does this add about the patient’s hearing loss.
  • Does this patient have “recruitment”?

Word recognition testing is often conducted at 30 or 40 dB sensation level.

  • Why do you think this was not done for this patient?
